From 10km to 3 marathons in 18 months-What next?

  • The last time I posted I was beginning my first ever marathon training programe with Ballina Athletic Club (and unlike this blog I actually finished it) and now I've just completed my 3rd marathon.

Dublin City Marathon 2017

Little did I know in March 2016 when I took to the hills of Kinvara in my first 10km fun run that I'd not only complete my first marathon only 7 months later,  but I would add 2 more marathons and all within 12 months...but thats how running makes you feel...slightly unhinged but also unstoppable!

Except this time I am stopping....marathons that is. I hopped straight from 1 training programe to the next without ever really taking a break and I can feel it in my body.
So the marathon is on a back burner as I looked for a different challenge.

I didn't have to search too far when Barry from Strand Fitness suggested I try his half Ironman around Lough Conn.
Strandman 2018
Now over the last year I have done 4 sprint triathlons and a bunch of duathlons, so the rationale to move up to the next level didn't phase me...especially since I initially thought I was signing up for an Olympic distance race which is overall 69 km short of an Ironman! Whoops.

So Strandman is looking to be a 1.9km swim, a 99km cycle and and 21km run...no biggie!

And so as we go into a cold and dark November I will be starting my new endurance challenge...watch out for me on the roads!
Stay tuned
